In a commendable response to public grievances, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has addressed a long-standing issue in Judicial Layout, Yelahanka Zone, by removing an obstructive underground drainage (UGD) pipe from a footpath. This decision has been met with appreciation from residents who had previously voiced concerns about the safety hazards posed by the pipe.
The problem originated from a case of oversight by a BBMP contractor, who installed pavers on the footpath without removing the UGD pipe that had been left by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) after their work. This negligence left pedestrians, particularly senior citizens, at risk of accidents, as the pipe protruded from the footpath.
The issue came to light following a feature by a local news outlet, which highlighted the dangerous and inconvenient state of the footpath. In response to the media coverage, the BBMP Major Roads Assistant Executive Engineer committed to resolving the problem promptly. One resident, pleased with the BBMP’s prompt intervention, praised the authorities for their effective resolution of the issue. “The BBMP’s quick action shows their commitment to addressing public concerns. It is essential for residents to bring such problems to the authorities’ attention to ensure timely resolutions,” the resident remarked.
The President of the Senior Citizens’ Welfare Association also expressed gratitude towards the BBMP. He acknowledged that the removal of the UGD pipe would significantly enhance pedestrian safety, particularly for the elderly residents of Judicial Layout. “The BBMP often faces criticism for its delays, but the Assistant Executive Engineer acted swiftly. This positive outcome was made possible by the media’s role in highlighting the issue. We hope this sets a precedent for addressing public grievances with similar urgency,” he stated. The swift action by the BBMP in this instance underscores the importance of active public engagement and responsive governance in maintaining and improving urban infrastructure.
