Bay Depression to Bring Rain to Kolkata

After a prolonged dry spell, Kolkata experienced a reprieve on Sunday with scattered drizzles and partly cloudy skies. However, the respite appears to be short-lived as the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecasts a week of wet weather due to a developing depression over the Bay of Bengal.

The weather system, currently situated over the west-central and adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal, is expected to intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. As of Sunday, the system was located approximately 280 km east of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 230 km east-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha), and 390 km south of Digha (West Bengal). It is moving north-northwest at a speed of 13 kmph. Local weather experts have predicted light to moderate rainfall across Kolkata and its surrounding districts, including Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura, and Purulia. The most significant rainfall is anticipated in specific areas of East and West Midnapore, South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, and Bankura, where heavy showers could occur on Monday.

Residents can expect ongoing light to moderate showers in areas such as North and South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Nadia, and Birbhum through Wednesday. The depression’s movement and intensification are likely to influence the weather pattern across South Bengal, bringing additional rainfall and potentially disrupting daily activities. This development follows a week of dry conditions, making the incoming rains a notable shift in weather patterns. The Met office has advised the public to stay informed about weather updates and be prepared for potential disruptions caused by the adverse weather conditions.
