Bangkok Hosts Diwali to Attract Indian Tourists

Bangkok is preparing to host a spectacular Diwali 2025 festival aimed squarely at the growing Indian outbound travel market.

The initiative, driven by Thailand’s National Soft Power Development Committee and the Thai Trade Representative’s Office, reflects an ambitious plan to strengthen bilateral cultural ties and attract over half a million Indian tourists to the country this October.Top Thai government officials recently met with the Indian Ambassador to Thailand and executives from more than 10 major Indian private-sector firms to finalise plans for the festival. The Diwali event is being shaped as an immersive, high-energy experience that mirrors the success of Thailand’s globally renowned Songkran Festival, with a vision to eventually establish it as a flagship regional event on the annual tourism calendar.

Diwali 2025 will spotlight a fusion of Indian and Thai traditions. Among the highlights are a vibrant light and sound parade, classical and contemporary Indian performances, multicultural fashion shows featuring celebrated designers from both countries, and a Global Fair offering curated experiences in retail, technology, wellness, and travel. A culinary showcase of Indian-Thai fusion cuisine is also planned, furthering Thailand’s positioning as a destination for global tastes. The event is not merely a cultural spectacle. Thai officials view it as a long-term economic opportunity, creating a platform for deeper engagement between Indian and Thai businesses and travellers. Key sectors such as hospitality, fashion, retail, and sustainable tourism are expected to benefit from increased cross-border interest and spending.

The Thai Trade Representative’s Office has emphasised that Indian travellers—especially those from the country’s rapidly growing middle and upper-middle classes—represent a high-potential market. According to recent tourism data, over 2.1 million Indian nationals visited Thailand in 2024. These visitors are known for their high repeat-visit rate and average spend exceeding 50,000 baht per trip, placing them among the most economically valuable tourist segments for the Thai economy. With 13 airlines operating direct flights between India and Thailand, and peak travel seasons in November and December aligning with the Diwali celebration, Thailand is well-positioned to tap into this travel demand. The festival is being carefully timed and curated to deliver both scale and intimacy—qualities that resonate with Indian family-oriented travel preferences and cultural sensibilities.

Officials leading the effort believe that festivals like Diwali can serve as soft power tools, strengthening people-to-people ties while enabling economic exchange through tourism. The initiative also reflects Thailand’s broader shift toward sustainable, experience-based tourism that balances cultural integrity with commercial opportunity.

For Indian tourists, the festival offers more than a familiar celebration in a foreign land—it reflects recognition and respect. For Thailand, it offers a chance to lead the way in a new model of regional cultural diplomacy that fuses tradition, tourism, and trade into a future-forward economic engine.
