Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) has issued a firm directive requiring contractors and project supervisors to clear all construction debris immediately following metro work, aiming to ease traffic congestion and enhance public safety across the city. The circular, effective from September 20, comes after repeated complaints from commuters and residents regarding leftover materials, barricades, and temporary obstructions near metro construction zones. These blockages have reportedly slowed traffic movement and created unsafe conditions on several city roads.
Under the new guidelines, all leftover materials, waste, temporary barricades, and debris must be removed promptly after completion of construction work. Contractors are instructed to restore road carriageways and footpaths to their original width and condition without delay. Site engineers and inspectors will closely monitor the process, certifying that roads meet safety and traffic standards. Officials emphasised that roads should be free from obstructions, with proper pavement levels, functional drainage, and adequate signage to prevent waterlogging and minimise risks to pedestrians and motorists. Any potholes or damage identified during construction are to be repaired immediately. Debris along medians, under viaducts, and near station sites must be removed to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow.
Traffic management during and after construction remains a key focus. The circular instructs placement of cones, barricades, and signage during work, which must be removed as soon as the activity concludes. Any required diversions should be coordinated with traffic authorities, with preference for execution during non-peak hours to reduce commuter inconvenience. Exceptions may be granted for unavoidable delays, such as adverse weather or resource constraints, but these require written approval with defined timelines for clearance. BMRCL officials will enforce compliance through inspections and regular monitoring, signalling zero tolerance for lapses that disrupt traffic or compromise road safety.
The initiative reflects BMRCL’s commitment to sustainable urban infrastructure and equitable mobility, ensuring that construction activities do not hinder the daily movement of residents or increase carbon emissions through congestion. By mandating rapid clearance and proper traffic restoration, the corporation aims to balance infrastructure development with civic responsibility. Experts in urban mobility note that efficient post-construction clearance is critical in rapidly expanding cities like Bangalore, where metro expansion projects intersect with busy arterial roads.
