Bandra-Worli Sea Link to Marine Drive Now Just 10 Minutes Away via Coastal Road

The Mumbai Coastal Road Project achieved a significant milestone on January 27, 2025, with the opening of the northbound bridge connecting the Bandra-Worli Sea Link to Marine Drive. The inauguration, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, also marked the launch of three new interchanges for smoother connectivity in key areas like Lotus Junction, Lower Parel, Worli, and Prabhadevi.

The Coastal Road now enables travel between Bandra and Marine Drive in just 10-15 minutes, compared to the earlier 45-minute journey. The new sections operate daily from 7 am to midnight, with approximately 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles using the route daily. Since March 2024, over 50 lakh vehicles have travelled the Coastal Road, reflecting its impact on easing congestion.

Advanced Infrastructure and India’s First Underwater Tunnel
The Coastal Road’s first phase spans 10.58 kilometres from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link to the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive. This eight-lane marvel features:

  • India’s first underwater twin tunnel, stretching 2.07 kilometres, located 17-20 metres below sea level.
  • 827-metre-long northbound bridge, equipped with a unique “Bow Arch String Girder.”
  • The underwater tunnel, operational since March 2024, passes beneath the Arabian Sea, Girgaon Chowpatty, and Malabar Hill, showcasing engineering excellence.

Green Spaces and Environmental Safeguards
A highlight of the project is the creation of 70 hectares of green space, including:

  • Jogging paths and bike lanes.
  • Public parks and outdoor auditoriums.
  • Additionally, a seawall has been built to prevent coastal erosion and protect against high tides.

Phase Two in Progress
The Coastal Road’s second phase, connecting Versova to Dahisar, is under construction. Once completed, it will further enhance Mumbai’s connectivity. Already, the project has:

Reduced travel time from Girgaon to Worli to 10 minutes.
Shortened the commute from South Mumbai to the airport.

Costs and Challenges
The project, part of Mumbai’s 1967 master plan, began in 2018 with a budget of ₹14,000 crore. Delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and logistical challenges pushed the completion beyond the original 2022 deadline. However, with 94% of the construction complete, the remaining sections are set to open by February 2025.
