Aurangabad Railway Station Officially Renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar With New Code CPSN Announced

Central Railway has officially renamed Aurangabad railway station as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar railway station, aligning with the Maharashtra government’s decision to rename the city three years ago. The newly assigned station code, CPSN, has now been integrated into the national railway database, marking the formal transition of one of Marathwada’s busiest stations into its new identity.

The change reflects a larger policy push by the government to restore historical relevance to city names while recognising the legacy of Maratha icons. Chhatrapati Sambhaji, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the second ruler of the Maratha Empire, is revered for his valour and sacrifice. The renaming of the city and its railway station is seen as a symbolic step in preserving cultural heritage while modernising infrastructure. Officials from the Central Railway confirmed that all signage, station boards, digital systems, and public announcements will now reflect the new name. The station, which falls under the Nanded Division of the South Central Railway, continues to serve as a major junction for travellers heading toward the heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora—both UNESCO World Heritage locations that draw thousands of domestic and international visitors annually.

Built in 1900 during the rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad, the railway station has been a key hub for over a century. Officials highlighted that while its name and code have changed, passenger amenities, connectivity, and service schedules remain unaffected. The renaming exercise is part of a wider modernisation plan under which several heritage stations across Maharashtra are being upgraded for accessibility, energy efficiency, and sustainable design. Meanwhile, the Indian Railways has announced extra train services across major routes to handle the surge in passenger traffic during the Diwali and Chhath Puja period. Senior railway officials stated that over 12,000 additional trains will operate nationwide to ensure smooth travel during the festive season. Of these, about 2,000 additional services will be run on the Western Railway network.

Passenger volume across key railway junctions in Maharashtra, including Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, has reportedly risen sharply in the last week. Railway authorities are conducting continuous reviews of holding areas, crowd management systems, and passenger facilities to ensure safety and comfort amid the festive rush. The renaming of Aurangabad to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar not only signifies a shift in nomenclature but also marks the evolution of a city rooted in history yet geared toward a more connected and sustainable future.
