the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has undertaken the installation of Canopy Bridges in Assam to facilitate the safe movement of Hoolock Gibbons.
This initiative aligns with the Indian Railways’ broader policy of protecting rare and endangered species, especially in areas where railway lines traverse forests or sanctuaries. The railway line passing through the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in Jorhat district is a habitat for the rare and highly arboreal Hoolock Gibbons. To ensure these species can safely cross the railway track that bifurcates the sanctuary, the NFR, in collaboration with the Assam State Forest Department, the Wildlife Institute of India, and other stakeholders, has decided to install Canopy Bridges at identified points within the sanctuary. The Assam State Forest Department has submitted a detailed design and cost estimate for the Canopy Bridges, which was prepared in consultation with the Wildlife Institute of India and NFR. The railway authorities have already deposited the estimated funds for the project in February 2024, facilitating the commencement of installation by the forest department.
These Canopy Bridges will be strategically placed to enable easy access for arboreal species from one side of the railway track to the other. The construction will utilise high-grade fastening materials and techniques to ensure the ends and knots of the bridges are securely clamped and tightened. As an additional safety measure, nets will be installed below the main twin-rope bridges to catch any animals that might accidentally fall off.
The design of the Canopy Rope Bridges aims for long-term integration with natural elements. Over time, lianas and creepers will be guided to grow along the ropes, creating a semi-artificial structure that blends seamlessly with the natural environment. This hybrid design is expected to enhance the durability and effectiveness of the bridges. The installation of these Canopy Bridges underscores the NFR’s commitment to wildlife conservation and the protection of endangered species. By implementing such measures, the railway authorities are taking proactive steps to prevent wildlife casualties and support biodiversity.
NFR, in constant consultation with the respective state forest departments, is dedicated to implementing every possible measure to safeguard endangered species and prevent their extinction. This initiative not only highlights the synergy between railway infrastructure development and environmental conservation but also sets a precedent for future projects across the country.
