Union Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, recently visited Kolkata to inaugurate a series of rail services, reflecting a significant push towards enhancing connectivity in West Bengal. This initiative is seen as a response to the increasing demands of commuters and a step towards modernising the railway infrastructure in the region.
During his visit to Braithwaite & Co Ltd, a key player in railway manufacturing, Vaishnaw participated in cleanliness drives under the “Swachchta Hi Seva” campaign. His engagement in such activities signals a holistic approach to governance, linking infrastructural advancements with community welfare. At Sealdah Railway Station, the extension of five platforms to accommodate 12-coach Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) local trains was a major highlight. This upgrade, which is expected to handle an additional 300,000 passengers daily, directly addresses the pressing need for improved commuting capacity in Kolkata’s suburban areas. Commuters have long expressed frustration over overcrowded trains, and this development is anticipated to bring much-needed relief.
The inauguration of the newly commissioned Nashipur Railway Bridge further highlights the government’s commitment to local needs. By establishing a vital rail link across the Bhagirathi River, this bridge addresses a long-standing demand from residents, facilitating smoother travel for thousands. Local voices reflect a sense of optimism, with many expressing hope that improved rail connectivity will stimulate economic activity and enhance accessibility to education and healthcare services. Vaishnaw also unveiled the Radhikapur–Anand Vihar Terminal Express, which connects Radhikapur in Uttar Dinajpur to Delhi. This service is expected to benefit a diverse group of travellers, including students and traders, thereby fostering regional economic growth. Moreover, the introduction of a Rail Coach Restaurant at Sealdah Station adds a unique dining experience, making travel more enjoyable for passengers.
Highlighting the rapid expansion of Kolkata Metro, Vaishnaw noted that between 1972 and 2014, only 28 km of metro track was developed. In contrast, an additional 38 km has been laid in just the last decade, showcasing a robust commitment to improving urban transport. This significant progress is welcomed by city dwellers who have long awaited a reliable public transport system. However, Vaishnaw acknowledged that land acquisition issues remain a hurdle for 61 pending railway projects in West Bengal. He urged the state government to collaborate closely to resolve these challenges, emphasising that timely completion of these projects is essential for realising the full potential of railway improvements in the region.
As West Bengal gears up for these transformative changes, the perspectives of local residents underscore a collective desire for enhanced infrastructure. Commuters are hopeful that these developments will not only ease daily travel but also promote sustainability through increased reliance on public transport, ultimately benefiting the environment.
