Arunachal Pradesh Receives Rs5.7 Crore from NEC for Key Development Projects Across Sectors

In the Arunachal Pradesh, the North Eastern Council (NEC) has disbursed over ₹5.7 crore in June 2025, targeting a cross-section of vital sectors. This strategic funding initiative aims to accelerate holistic regional growth, uplift underdeveloped areas, and reinforce infrastructure critical to both public welfare and national interests. According to an official release issued from Itanagar, the funds will be utilised to support ongoing and new projects across health, education, tourism, agriculture, cultural preservation, and rural infrastructure development.

A significant portion of the funding is earmarked for community-based livelihood initiatives, infrastructure creation in remote regions, and the enhancement of educational and healthcare institutions. Among the notable projects receiving support is the development of fisheries in the Aalo East Assembly constituency of West Siang district. The initiative is expected to strengthen the local rural economy through sustainable aquaculture, improve food security, and generate employment opportunities for indigenous communities. Tourism infrastructure also forms a critical component of NEC’s funding priorities. The construction of a Signature View Point at Ziro in Lower Subansiri district, located along the Potin–Pangin Road, is one such endeavour designed to promote eco-tourism in the region. The location is expected to become a major stop along the tourist circuit, offering panoramic views of the Apatani Valley and potentially generating increased footfall to the area. In a similar push for scenic infrastructure development, funds have also been allocated to the construction and enhancement of the Tissa View Point Camp in Tirap district, further expanding tourism potential in southern Arunachal.

In tandem with its infrastructure push, the NEC has also placed a strong emphasis on preserving the cultural heritage of the state. Funding has been allocated for the promotion and literary development of Arunachal Pradesh’s indigenous mother languages, recognising the urgent need to document and protect endangered dialects and cultural narratives. This effort aligns with broader national and global campaigns to preserve intangible cultural heritage, particularly in ethnolinguistically diverse regions such as the Northeast. Healthcare and education sectors have not been overlooked. A substantial portion of the June allocation will go towards the construction of a 60-bed nursing hostel at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS). The addition is expected to not only address the critical shortage of residential infrastructure for nursing students but also improve the quality of training and retention of healthcare professionals in the region. Similarly, the construction of a Government Higher Secondary School in Dirang, West Kameng district, has been sanctioned, with the objective of improving access to quality education in one of the state’s geographically challenging zones.

In addition to the ₹5.7 crore released under the regular NEC plan, Arunachal Pradesh also received funds through the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS). These funds are designated for two major road development projects: ₹5.38 crore has been allocated for the construction of a road from Riaga to Sango Village, and ₹3 crore for the Likwa Gyadi–Gyawepurang road project in East Kameng district. Both projects are aimed at significantly enhancing rural connectivity, bridging accessibility gaps in isolated areas, and improving last-mile delivery of public services. Adding to this momentum, two major NEC-funded road projects in Tawang district were declared completed and officially closed in June 2025. The first project — a 15-kilometre road from Babrang (Murga) Bridge Point to Rho Village — was originally sanctioned in March 2019 at a cost of ₹26.5 crore. Its strategic importance cannot be overstated. Besides offering access to remote and picturesque tourist destinations such as Chumi-Geyser, Gongkhar-La Pass, and Gori-Chen Peak, it plays a pivotal role in enhancing defence logistics and operational readiness near the Indo-China border. The second project involved upgrading the road stretch from National Highway 13 to the Ugyen Tsangpo Helipad, further supporting regional connectivity and air mobility in the frontier zone.

These infrastructure developments reflect a conscious effort by the NEC to strike a balance between strategic imperatives and regional development. With much of Arunachal’s terrain posing logistical and topographical challenges, these road projects are not merely about mobility—they are lifelines that connect isolated communities, support military readiness, and create economic linkages that have long-term developmental impact. The current wave of funding demonstrates NEC’s evolving role from being a planning agency to becoming a more execution-focused institution. It also reinforces the Centre’s intention to strengthen the economic resilience of the Northeast while simultaneously addressing its strategic vulnerabilities. Arunachal Pradesh, with its complex border geography, ethnic diversity, and developmental asymmetries, stands to benefit significantly from such integrated support systems.

The NEC’s interventions go beyond infrastructure. They signal a governance shift — one that recognises the need to integrate cultural preservation, ecological sustainability, and economic development. Whether through road connectivity that enables inter-village commerce, educational institutions that uplift human capital, or tourism initiatives that harness natural beauty for economic gain, these projects form the scaffolding of a more inclusive and future-ready Arunachal Pradesh.

As India eyes a more robust and secure Northeastern frontier, the convergence of development and strategic planning in the state is no longer optional—it is essential. NEC’s June disbursement is not just a financial transaction but a long-term investment into the state’s socioeconomic transformation, reinforcing Arunachal Pradesh’s role in the broader national narrative of growth, security, and sustainability.
