The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has committed over Rs70 billion to advance the Sagarmala Projects in Andhra Pradesh, marking a significant investment aimed at revolutionising the state’s maritime infrastructure. This initiative is part of the broader Sagarmala Programme, which seeks to enhance port connectivity and boost economic development through improved port infrastructure.
In a recent update to the Lok Sabha, the Union Minister outlined the financial commitments and ongoing developments under the Sagarmala Projects in Andhra Pradesh. The ministry has recently received 29 new proposals from the Andhra Pradesh government, collectively valued at approximately Rs33 billion. These proposals encompass a range of projects, including port development, coastal berths, fish landing centres, Ro-Pax and passenger jetties, and various fishing harbours. To date, the ministry has already sanctioned Rs4.5 billion for the development of several key projects. Additionally, significant investments have been made by the Visakhapatnam Port Authority and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), which have undertaken a total of 36 projects in the state. These projects represent a combined investment of Rs46 billion.
Of these 36 projects, 22 have been completed with a total expenditure of Rs25.30 billion, while 14 are currently underway with an investment of Rs20.70 billion. Notably, the establishment of two Centres of Excellence in Maritime and Shipbuilding in Mumbai and Visakhapatnam has been highlighted. The Visakhapatnam centre, which is the first of its kind in Asia, has trained over 10,000 students, equipping them with critical engineering and technical skills necessary for the maritime and shipbuilding industries.
The substantial investment and ongoing development efforts underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing maritime infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh. This includes modernising ports, improving coastal facilities, and fostering skill development in the sector. The Sagarmala Projects are poised to drive economic growth by improving connectivity and expanding the capabilities of the state’s maritime sector. As these projects continue to unfold, they are expected to bring substantial benefits to the local economy, create job opportunities, and position Andhra Pradesh as a key player in India’s maritime landscape.
