Andhra Pradesh Railway Lines To Be Electrified Under RVNL’s Green Upgrade Project

In a major boost to India’s sustainable mobility push, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has secured a high-value electrification contract from South Central Railway to modernise railway infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh. The project, focused on the Vijayawada Division, aims to upgrade the existing 1x25kV Overhead Equipment (OHE) system to a more energy-efficient 2x25kV system across two crucial corridors—Duvvada to Rajahmundry and Samalkot to Kakinada Port.

Spanning 195.5 route kilometres and 391 track kilometres, the upgradation is designed to improve load capacity, energy optimisation, and operational reliability, especially for high-density freight corridors. The new 2x25kV OHE configuration—commonly used on high-speed and heavy-haul routes—will not only lower transmission losses but also support the handling of heavier trains with reduced environmental impact. According to officials, the scope of work includes design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of OHE systems, along with feeder lines and grounding systems to ensure system stability and safety. The project falls under RVNL’s regular business operations and complies with Regulation 30 of SEBI’s LODR norms. The company confirmed its regulatory disclosures as part of its filing to the stock exchange.

The infrastructure push is part of Indian Railways’ broader electrification and decarbonisation mission, with the dual goal of cutting carbon emissions and improving freight logistics. The Vijayawada Division serves as a strategic node in this ecosystem, linking the eastern ports to inland freight routes. Experts say the transition to a 2x25kV system signals a shift towards future-ready rail transport in India. With electricity replacing diesel traction, the initiative also aligns with national climate goals and net-zero targets. Officials noted that the integration of such advanced systems is essential for modernising India’s ageing railway backbone while creating green jobs and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

RVNL, a key public sector player since 2005, continues to expand its portfolio across metros, highways, and cross-border projects. This latest contract strengthens its pivotal role in transforming India’s transport landscape with a blend of technology, sustainability, and national connectivity.
