Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone Launches E-Waste Recycling Facility

Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh – In a significant stride towards sustainable urban development, the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) has inaugurated the state’s first integrated electronic waste (e-waste) management facility.

This pioneering initiative positions AMTZ at the forefront of India’s efforts to address the escalating challenges of electronic waste disposal and recycling. The facility, launched by Dr. P. Krishnaiah, Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), introduces a comprehensive, environmentally compliant system for the extraction and processing of electronic waste. Located within a medical technology park, this project is the first of its kind in India, setting a national precedent in sustainable e-waste handling.

Designed in collaboration with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, the plant employs advanced mechanical and chemical technologies to recover high-purity metals from discarded electronic components. Operating under a “Zero Waste” model, the facility ensures minimal environmental footprint while maximizing material recovery. A key feature of the initiative is its integration of a unified digital platform that connects producers, consumers, and licensed processors. This platform facilitates traceability and regulatory compliance across the e-waste lifecycle. Additionally, doorstep pickup services and real-time valuation offer incentives for public participation, allowing consumers to exchange obsolete electronics for immediate monetary compensation.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities and further strengthen AMTZ’s reputation as a leader in sustainable industrial development and circular economy practices. Established in 2016, AMTZ is India’s premier medical technology manufacturing hub, dedicated to fostering innovation, reducing import dependency, and promoting self-sufficiency in the healthcare sector. Located in Visakhapatnam, AMTZ provides a world-class ecosystem for medical device manufacturing, research, and development. The zone features state-of-the-art infrastructure, including testing labs, regulatory support, and incubation facilities, enabling companies to develop cutting-edge medical technologies. With a strong focus on affordability, quality, and accessibility, AMTZ plays a crucial role in strengthening India’s healthcare infrastructure and positioning the country as a global leader in medical device manufacturing.

The establishment of this e-waste management facility not only addresses the pressing environmental concerns associated with electronic waste but also exemplifies AMTZ’s commitment to sustainable and equitable urban development. As the facility becomes operational, it is anticipated to serve as a model for other regions in India, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of integrating advanced e-waste recycling technologies within industrial hubs. In conclusion, the launch of the e-waste management facility at AMTZ marks a significant milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s journey towards sustainable urban development. By embracing innovative technologies and fostering public participation, the initiative sets a benchmark for responsible electronic waste management in India.
