Andhra Pradesh Leads 3D‑Printed Rail Innovation

Parvatipuram Railway Station in Andhra Pradesh now features India’s inaugural 3D‑printed Gangman Hut—a swift, sustainable milestone in rail infrastructure. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways, has constructed a pioneering Gangman Hut at Parvatipuram station (PVP) using robotic 3D concrete printing.

Completed in just 25 days, this 100 m² structure marks a first for Indian Railways and supports the ongoing Vizianagaram–Titlagarh third‑line project, designed to boost capacity in this industrial corridor. The hut harnesses advanced materials—Ultra‑High Performance Concrete (UHPC) and lightweight concrete—optimised via layer‑by‑layer robotic technology, dramatically accelerating build time while reducing material wastage and carbon emissions. This eco‑centred construction aligns with national objectives for low‑carbon, sustainable urban infrastructure . The structure features unique geometrical forms, textured facades and wavy walls—designs typically infeasible under traditional construction methods. Prior to execution, a virtual 3D model allowed stakeholders to preview and refine the design, exemplifying agile, digital‑first infrastructure planning .

The innovation goes further with integrated lighting that balances natural and artificial sources, enhancing both energy efficiency and user comfort. As a facility for track‑maintenance staff, the hut also signals a commitment to gender‑neutral and inclusive design in field infrastructure. This project emerges as part of a broader national push: RVNL currently leads over 152 railway and metro infrastructure schemes across India, and this feat reinforces its reputation for embracing modern, sustainable methods. This is not India’s first 3D‑printed public building—precedents include a post‑office in Bengaluru built with L&T technology and a Kerala‑based demo hut—but Parvatipuram is the first such application within the Railways.

By combining robotic printing and UHPC materials, the construction has slashed timelines and waste, aligning with our editorial imperative to promote eco‑friendly and zero‑net‑carbon cities.
