Andaman MP Calls for Swift Action on NH-4 Infrastructure Crisis

The Member of Parliament for Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, has formally petitioned Nitin Gadkari, the Honourable Minister of Road Transport and Highways, highlighting the critical state of National Highway 4 (NH-4) in the region.

In his correspondence to Minister Gadkari, MP Ray underscored the stark disparity between the initial phase and subsequent developments of NH-4 across the Andaman Islands. While acknowledging the successful completion of the initial phase and the construction of a pivotal bridge during his tenure, Ray expressed deep concern over the current condition of the highway, particularly the stretch from Baratang to Mayabunder in the North and Middle Andaman district. Of utmost concern to Ray is the incomplete bridge over the middle strait and the deteriorating road conditions that have transformed NH-4 into a perilous journey for commuters.

He highlighted the severe repercussions on local livelihoods, tourism, and public health, attributing these issues to frequent breakdowns, accidents, and health hazards caused by dust and dirt exposure along the route. Ray emphasised the devastating impact on the tourism sector, historically a robust industry for the Isles, and the resultant economic strain affecting employment opportunities across the region.

Urging immediate action, Ray urged Minister Gadkari to expedite the completion of NH-4 to align with national standards, resolve bottlenecks delaying bridge construction over the middle strait, and initiate an inquiry into delays and inefficiencies. Concluding his appeal with a plea for swift governmental intervention, MP Ray expressed confidence in Minister Gadkari’s commitment to restoring NH-4’s functionality and enhancing the quality of life for residents of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
