Amritsar Katra Vande Bharat to Boost Faster Greener Regional Travel
Amritsar – The rail connectivity between Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir is set to receive a significant boost with the launch of the Amritsar–Katra Vande Bharat Express. Designed to cut travel time and improve passenger comfort, the new semi-high-speed service is being hailed by officials and transport experts as a step forward in sustainable and inclusive mobility.
According to railway authorities, the train will complete the journey in just 5 hours and 35 minutes, operating six days a week except Tuesday. It will run as train numbers 26405 and 26406, making stops at Beas, Jalandhar City, Pathankot Cantt, and Jammu Tawi. The new link is expected to enhance connectivity to religious destinations such as the Golden Temple and Vaishno Devi Shrine, while also opening up greater economic opportunities for the region. This development comes at a time when Indian Railways is expanding its Vande Bharat network to deliver faster, cleaner, and safer travel options. Currently, 144 Vande Bharat services operate across the country. Since their launch in 2019, these modern trains have set new benchmarks for passenger amenities, with features such as faster acceleration, the Kavach collision avoidance system, automatic plug doors, onboard CCTV surveillance, and ergonomically designed reclining seats.
Railway officials stress that beyond speed and comfort, the Vande Bharat series is a part of India’s broader push for sustainable transport solutions. By offering an attractive alternative to private vehicle travel, these trains have the potential to reduce road congestion and lower carbon emissions in the region. Experts highlight that for cities striving for eco-friendly and equitable growth, high-capacity, energy-efficient rail services like this play a pivotal role. Tourism stakeholders are also optimistic about the impact of the new service. The shorter travel time is expected to encourage more visitors from Punjab to explore Jammu & Kashmir’s religious and leisure destinations, while residents of the Union Territory will find easier access to Punjab’s cultural and commercial hubs.
Officials note that the Northern Railway zone will maintain and operate the train, ensuring high operational standards. The new route will be the fifth Vande Bharat service in the Union Territory, joining the existing New Delhi–Katra, Katra–New Delhi, Katra–Srinagar, and Srinagar–Katra services. While passenger response will determine the long-term success of the service, transport planners view this launch as an important step in strengthening regional mobility. By prioritising speed, sustainability, and accessibility, the Amritsar–Katra Vande Bharat Express reflects the changing face of Indian Railways and its vision for a modern, connected, and eco-conscious future.
