Amravati Airport Gets DGCA License for Flight Operations
The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC)-developed Amravati Airport has achieved a significant milestone by securing its aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This approval designates the airport as a licensed Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) airport, marking a crucial step towards enhancing air connectivity, economic development, and tourism in the region. In an announcement made by the Chief Minister, the news was hailed as a new era for the region, promising better air connectivity and potential for significant economic growth.
The Chief Minister confirmed that flight operations will begin by the end of this month, with the first route being operated by Alliance Air. Initially, the airline will fly the Mumbai-Amravati-Mumbai route three times a week using an ATR 72 aircraft under the government’s RCS initiative. In preparation for its full operational status, the airport recently completed a pivotal air calibration of its Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) system, a crucial safety feature that ensures safe landings for aircraft. The calibration, carried out by the Airports Authority of India’s Flight Inspection Unit, involved a Beech Air 360 ER Turboprop aircraft and tested the system on both ends of the runway.
With this step complete, the airport is now moving towards its commercial operations, with only final security checks remaining.Officially named Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Airport, Amravati Airport is strategically located 15 km south of Amravati, near Belora. Once operational, it will reduce the region’s reliance on Nagpur Airport, which is located 150 km away. This development is expected to improve regional air connectivity, offer new business and investment opportunities, and provide a major boost to the tourism sector. The airport’s commercial operations are set to commence soon, further positioning Amravati as a critical hub for both business and leisure travel.
