Amman Chamber of Industry (ACI) has unveiled Jordan’s first digital platform dedicated to industrial waste exchange. The initiative is being hailed as a key milestone in the country’s transition towards a circular economy and aims to significantly reduce industrial waste while unlocking economic value across sectors.The platform, launched with technical support from the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) under the Green Activities in Industrial Facilities project, is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Designed to facilitate industrial symbiosis, the new digital solution enables factories to exchange non-hazardous waste as usable raw materials, thereby bridging resource gaps while addressing environmental concerns.The launch event, held at ACI headquarters, saw participation from key stakeholders in Jordan’s industrial and environmental sectors. Leaders reaffirmed the importance of transforming environmental burdens into viable business opportunities. According to ACI officials, the platform is expected to redefine how factories manage waste by offering a transparent and structured exchange mechanism that minimises landfill dependency and enhances inter-industry collaboration.
At the core of the initiative is a model of circularity—whereby waste is no longer treated as an end-product but rather as a recoverable and re-deployable resource. This digital marketplace not only reduces raw material procurement costs but also lowers the financial and ecological burden of waste disposal for industrial units. In a resource-scarce region, the move is seen as both economically prudent and environmentally responsible.The Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment underlined that Jordan’s green economy ambitions are no longer aspirational—they are a strategic necessity. He stated that effective implementation of such initiatives relies on robust public-private partnerships that foster trust and cooperation between the government and the industrial base.
The platform has been structured to encourage innovation and entrepreneurial engagement in recycling and reuse, creating new business models and job opportunities in the green sector. It is expected to spur environmentally friendly manufacturing practices and encourage industries to design waste out of their systems from the outset.Analysts suggest that this development could serve as a blueprint for other countries in the region grappling with rising industrial waste and limited landfill capacity. Jordan’s proactive approach could place it at the forefront of the MENA region’s transition to circular economies, especially at a time when international markets increasingly demand greener supply chains and compliance with global ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) standards.
