AMC’s Vigilance Crackdown on 30,000 Out-of-Jurisdiction Vehicle Owners

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated a crackdown on suburban vehicle owners who have been evading tax payments by registering their vehicles outside the municipal jurisdiction.

The implementation of a new rule requiring Aadhaar as a mandatory document for vehicle registration has significantly aided AMC in gathering data and identifying defaulters. This move has empowered the civic body to take stringent actions against owners who fail to pay road tax, even if their vehicles are registered outside municipal limits but are regularly used on the city’s roads.

Specific areas bordering the city limits, including Shela, Godhavi, Manpur, Kamod, Bakrol, and Koteshwar, have been earmarked for intensified vehicle tax collection efforts by AMC. Over the past two years, AMC has identified a staggering 30,673 vehicles falling under this category, with their owners promptly issued tax notices. This crackdown has yielded positive results, with AMC successfully recovering Rs 67.51 lakh in tax dues from defaulters. According to Chapter 8 of the Gujarat Municipal Corporations (GPMC) Act, AMC possesses the authority to collect vehicle tax from any vehicle regularly utilised within city limits, irrespective of its registration location. Vehicle owners who receive notices are provided the opportunity to settle their dues either online or by visiting any AMC zonal office. Exemptions can be claimed by owners who can demonstrate that their vehicles are exclusively used within their village or local area.

The recent mandate by the state government, making Aadhaar card a mandatory proof for vehicle registration, is expected to streamline the process of obtaining information on vehicles registered outside city limits. AMC’s online registration and tax payment system further enhance efficiency in vehicle tax collection, ensuring better compliance and revenue generation for the corporation. Over the past two financial years, AMC has issued a total of 30,676 notices, resulting in the recovery of Rs 67.51 lakh in due tax. This proactive approach by AMC underscores its commitment to fiscal discipline and ensures that all vehicle owners contribute their fair share towards municipal revenue, thereby supporting the city’s development and infrastructure projects.
