The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has intensified its crackdown on property tax defaulters, sealing 333 properties in the East Zone to recover overdue taxes. Through rigorous enforcement measures, the civic body has successfully collected INR 43.25 lakh in outstanding property taxes following a wave of issued notices. Demonstrating a proactive approach to compliance, several defaulters sought to avoid property sealing by submitting advance cheques amounting to INR 45 lakh.
To ensure long-term compliance and accountability, AMC’s property tax department has adopted stringent measures such as placing liens on revenue records. So far, liens have been attached to 176 properties, including 16 in recent weeks, with legal proceedings underway for an additional 84. Officials emphasise that these actions are aimed at instilling discipline among taxpayers and improving municipal revenue collection to fund essential public services.
The sealing initiative highlights the growing urgency for better compliance in Ahmedabad’s urban landscape, where defaulting on property taxes impedes the civic body’s capacity to meet infrastructure and service delivery demands. In comparison, similar measures in cities like Pune and Mumbai have yielded substantial recoveries, setting benchmarks for effective urban governance. The AMC’s approach underscores the importance of timely tax payments as a cornerstone of sustainable urban development.
