AMC Cleared of Water Mismanagement Allegation

The Ahmedabad Mega Clean Association has issued a formal apology to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) following an incident of misidentification regarding the discharge of water from an AMC-operated tanker. The association had erroneously claimed that untreated wastewater was being released into a mega pipeline, prompting an inspection and subsequent scrutiny by the Gujarat High Court.

Two days prior, amicus curiae Hemang Shah presented a video to the High Court, allegedly showing an AMC tanker discharging wastewater into the pipeline, which is designed exclusively for treated effluent water en route to the river. This revelation led the court to reprimand the civic body, raising concerns about the city’s waste management protocols. However, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner of AMC’s North Zone refuted these allegations, clarifying that the tanker in question did not carry untreated water. The commissioner termed the situation a “misunderstanding,” emphasising that the water discharged was compliant with the regulations. Acknowledging the error, the Mega Clean Association on Thursday tendered an official apology to the AMC’s municipal chief.

Deepak Davda, the joint CEO of the association, admitted the mistake, citing a lapse in judgment by the staff. He took full responsibility and assured that corrective measures would be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. This incident underscores the importance of accurate reporting and communication in environmental management. The High Court has instructed the amicus curiae to provide a comprehensive report on the matter, with Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal indicating that a special bench will be constituted to further deliberate on the issue. This development reflects the judicial system’s keen oversight on public infrastructure and environmental safety, highlighting the critical nature of due diligence in civic operations.
