Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Sri Chandrababu Naidu has officially declared Amaravati as a “Green Hydrogen Valley” at the Green Hydrogen Summit 2025, signalling a monumental commitment to clean energy transition. This strategic move, backed by a ₹10,00,000 crore investment and a policy aiming to create 7.5 lakh jobs, positions the state as a frontrunner in India’s quest for affordable, cost-effective clean energy, crucial for fostering sustainable and zero net carbon urban environments.
The two-day summit, held at SRM University-AP, convened global experts, government agencies, researchers, policymakers, and industrialists to address the critical need for a cleaner, more sustainable future. Chief Minister Naidu lauded the forum as historical, emphasising Andhra Pradesh’s unique prospects in green hydrogen development and storage, driven by its comprehensive Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia Policy and a strong ideological balance. This proactive policy framework is designed to attract significant investment, laying the groundwork for a robust green energy ecosystem.
Dr. V. K. Saraswat, Member of NITI Aayog, underscored the national significance of embracing cleaner fuels, noting that Green Hydrogen is at the heart of the National Hydrogen Mission, a pivotal step towards achieving a sustainable, carbon-neutral future for India. Prof. D. Narayana Rao, Executive Director-Research, SRM Group of Institutions, highlighted India’s growing global admiration for its contributions to solving critical issues like clean energy and sustainable growth, with various ministries already undertaking green hydrogen projects aligned with their sectors.
Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, articulated the vision of developing Andhra Pradesh as a hydrogen hub, stressing that strategic investments and supportive government policies are key to producing scalable and profitable clean energy. The Chief Secretary of the State, Sri K. Vijayanand IAS, further emphasised the necessity for specific expertise and skill development in hydrogen technologies, identifying top universities like SRM AP as crucial innovation centres with advanced research infrastructure. SRM AP is set to establish an Innovation Centre for Green Hydrogen Technologies and has launched a Department of Energy Engineering to nurture future talent.
The commitment to green hydrogen extends beyond economic opportunity; it is a profound step towards protecting nature, fostering a circular economy, and ensuring long-term sustainability. By investing in clean energy, Andhra Pradesh is directly contributing to reduced air pollution, improved public health outcomes, and a lower carbon footprint, all essential for creating eco-friendly and liveable cities. Furthermore, the focus on job creation within the green hydrogen sector ensures that this transition is inclusive and provides equitable opportunities, contributing to gender-neutral urban development where economic growth is harmonised with environmental stewardship and social well-being.
