A consortium led by Alstom has been awarded a contract to deliver the Caribbean’s inaugural monorail system in the Dominican Republic. The contract, valued at approximately €370 million, was granted by the Fideicomiso para el Desarrollo del Sistema de Transporte Masivo the Dominican Republic and marks a significant step forward in the country’s transportation infrastructure.
The monorail system will be constructed in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic. This transportation system will span 13 km, encompassing 14 stations, and is designed to have the capacity to transport up to 20,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
Alstom will provide the project with 13 four-car Innovia Monorail 300 trains, equipped with the Cityflo 650 GOA4 driverless signaling system. The GOA4 system is currently the highest grade of automation worldwide, enabling the trains to operate in a fully automated and driverless mode.
The monorail system is scheduled for completion in 2027 and expected to significantly improve public transportation in Santiago de los Caballeros. This city in the north of the Dominican Republic has a population of 1.3 million. The Innovia systems have already been successfully integrated into more than 40 major cities worldwide, including Cairo, Bangkok and Los Angeles.
