Seven of India’s most frequented railway stations are set to receive cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) upgrades. This initiative will see the deployment of advanced AI-powered facial recognition surveillance systems, fundamentally transforming how security is managed in these bustling transit hubs. The move is a testament to the Indian Railways’ commitment to leveraging technology for a safer, more sustainable, and inclusive urban mobility ecosystem.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) in Mumbai, a UNESCO Heritage Site and one of India’s oldest and busiest railway stations, handling over three million passengers daily, is among the first to undergo this technological metamorphosis. The integration of AI will provide a powerful tool to identify known offenders, augmenting the station’s existing robust security framework. Similarly, New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), which witnesses over five lakh passengers daily, will benefit immensely from AI surveillance and facial recognition, not only to track potential offenders but also to aid in locating missing persons, a critical concern, especially during festive seasons when crowds swell.

The modernisation drive extends to Kolkata’s iconic Howrah Junction and Sealdah Railway Station, both vital arteries of West Bengal’s economy, serving thousands of passengers daily. AI-based facial recognition will be instrumental in identifying suspects and missing individuals, marking a significant advancement in their security architecture. Sealdah’s upgrade will further incorporate real-time video analytics, empowering authorities to swiftly identify and address potential disturbances, contributing to a more orderly and secure environment for all.
Further south, Dr. M.G.R. Chennai Central Railway Station, managing approximately five lakh passengers each day, will leverage AI surveillance for enhanced facial scanning capabilities and superior crowd management. Hyderabad’s Secunderabad Railway Station, a critical junction connecting South and Central India, will see its security bolstered by AI facial recognition and automated surveillance alerts. Lastly, Danapur Railway Station in Bihar, a prominent link between Eastern and Northern India, will receive an AI boost, adding a new dimension of security to this crucial Patna-area transit point.
This pan-Indian upgrade is poised to offer multiple benefits.
