Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) unveiled its comprehensive pre-monsoon plan on Thursday, with the launch of seven zonal control rooms strategically positioned across the city.
Each zone will host a dedicated control room, operating round-the-clock in three shifts throughout the rainy season, aimed at addressing various rain-related issues and ensuring the city’s resilience during adverse weather conditions. Citizens will now have the convenience of lodging complaints related to hazardous billboards, dilapidated structures, tree collapses, potholes, road cave-ins, and waterlogging through dedicated WhatsApp numbers assigned to each zone. This initiative aims to streamline communication and enhance responsiveness to citizen concerns during the monsoon period.
As part of its preparatory measures, AMC has installed high-capacity pumps at 21 underpasses to facilitate swift drainage of rainwater. Additionally, experienced personnel equipped with walkie-talkie sets have been deployed to ensure effective coordination and response to emergent situations. The cleaning of 63,725 catch pits for rainwater is currently underway, with plans outlined for the subsequent phases of catch pit maintenance. Notably, all catch pits have been meticulously numbered and painted yellow for easy identification and monitoring. AMC’s parks and gardens department is set to deploy nine tree trimming vans, supported by 60 tractor trolleys and four labourers assigned to each ward. Emphasis is placed on trimming dry and precarious trees to mitigate risks during inclement weather. Furthermore, extensive desilting of drain lines covering 105km has been completed to date.
In addition to these measures, the civic body has intensified efforts to enhance rainwater drainage by deepening lakes and cleaning percolating wells. A network of 67 sumps has been established along the Kharicut canal, complemented by the installation of 113 pumps to facilitate efficient rainwater management. Utilizing its extensive network of 2,385 CCTV cameras, AMC will closely monitor water congestion across the city, enabling prompt intervention and mitigation of flood-related issues. AMC’s proactive approach to pre-monsoon preparedness underscores its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Ahmedabad’s residents. With robust infrastructure and streamlined protocols in place, the city is poised to navigate the upcoming monsoon season with resilience and efficiency.
