Ahmedabad To Get Sindur Van Oxygen Park With 12000 Trees

A new green lung space named ‘Sindur Van’ is set to come up in the Chandlodia Ward of Ahmedabad’s Northwest Zone under a public-private partnership model.

The Oxygen Park, to be developed near Jagatpur Bridge on a 5,000 sq. m. plot, will feature 12,000 trees, including 551 Sindur trees, known for their commercial and medicinal properties. The initiative is being spearheaded by the Samast Vaishnav Vanik Parivar (SVVP), which will fund the entire project and maintain it for five years. The project is located within the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency and Ghatlodia Assembly segment. The plantation drive will use the Miyawaki technique, known for encouraging dense, native, and fast-growing urban forests. A wide variety of indigenous species will be included in the plan, with special focus on the Sindur tree (Bixa Orellana), from which the park derives its name.

The Sindur tree, native to South and Southeast Asia, produces a naturally occurring red pigment from its seeds. This pigment is traditionally used as a forehead mark (sindur) and as a natural food colouring. Commercially, the pigment is utilised in cosmetics, inks, soaps, and paints. The tree also has recognised medicinal uses, with applications in treating skin infections, inflammation, and digestive disorders. This initiative aligns with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s broader efforts to expand green infrastructure and raise public awareness about the ecological and health benefits of native plant species.

The project is expected to improve local biodiversity and provide a sustainable recreational space for city residents.
