Ahmedabad Targets Unauthorised Industrial Units

Ahmedabad: In a decisive move to enhance compliance with building and safety regulations, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Commissioner M Thennarasan has directed officials to begin sealing factories and industrial units in eastern Ahmedabad that are operating without Building Use (BU) permissions or fire No Objection Certificates (NOCs). This directive came during a meeting on Monday with officials from AMC’s estate and town development department, where the commissioner expressed dissatisfaction with their performance.

Despite the officials citing staff shortages and other challenges, Commissioner Thennarasan stressed that the department has adequate personnel to carry out the sealing operations. This meeting follows a stringent four-page letter from the state urban development department to all municipal corporations, holding them accountable for buildings operating without the necessary BU permissions and fire NOCs.

Sources within AMC have indicated that the civic body often fails to act against such irregularities unless prompted by higher authorities or judicial rebuke. A pertinent example is the suo motu petition on pollution in the Sabarmati River, where only after the high court’s reprimand did AMC start disconnecting illegal sewer connections in eastern areas. Similarly, the recent crackdown follows a tragic fire incident in a gaming zone in Rajkot, which spurred the AMC to intensify its oversight of factories and buildings lacking the required approvals.

The meeting, attended by the deputy municipal commissioner and other senior officers, highlighted the pressing need for stringent enforcement of regulations to ensure public safety and compliance. The AMC’s renewed focus on sealing unauthorised industrial units is seen as a critical step in addressing long-standing issues of non-compliance that pose significant risks to safety and environmental standards.

By initiating these actions, AMC aims to set a robust precedent for regulatory compliance, ensuring that industrial and commercial establishments adhere strictly to the stipulated guidelines. This move is anticipated to not only enhance safety standards but also foster a culture of accountability and responsibility among business operators in Ahmedabad.

As the enforcement drive gains momentum, stakeholders in the industrial and real estate sectors are closely monitoring the developments, recognising the potential implications for operational practices and compliance requirements. The AMC’s commitment to stringent regulatory oversight marks a pivotal shift towards safeguarding urban safety and sustainability, reinforcing the need for adherence to statutory norms in all facets of urban development and industrial operations.
