Ahmedabad Relies on 300 Borewells for Drinking Water Supply in Various Areas

Ahmedabad, a city that has been expanding rapidly in recent years, around 300 borewells are playing a crucial role in supplying drinking water to various localities. A recent meeting of the city’s water and sewerage committee highlighted the ongoing efforts to improve the city’s water distribution system. The committee, chaired by Dilip Bagaria, reviewed the use of borewells and the construction of water tanks to address water supply challenges in several areas.

Out of the 319 borewells installed across Ahmedabad, approximately 300 are dedicated to supplying drinking water, especially in areas that face low water pressure. This issue is particularly noticeable in newer parts of the city, which were incorporated into Ahmedabad in 2007. Areas like Ghatlodia, Chandlodia, Jodhpur, Maktampura, Sarkhej, Thaltej, Vejalpur, Bodakdev, and Gota, all of which are growing rapidly, rely on borewells to meet the demand for water. For example, areas like Jodhpur and Bopal-Ghuma have seen significant use of borewells for drinking water. In Jodhpur, seven pockets in Bopal-Ghuma depend on borewell supplies, but new water tanks are currently under construction. Once these tanks are completed, the borewells in those areas will be shut down. Similarly, the Bopal-Ghuma area, which started receiving borewell water in 2020, is also set to transition to tank-based water supply.

In total, the city has seen a varied distribution of borewells. Ghatlodia, for instance, has five borewells; Chandlodia has 11; Thaltej has nine; Bodakdev has four; Gota has seven; Vejalpur has two; Maktampura has 10; and Sarkhej is served by 12 borewells. This network ensures that residents in these areas have access to potable water, even if the main water supply lacks adequate pressure. While borewells are currently filling the gap in these underserved areas, Ahmedabad is also working on long-term solutions. Water tanks are being constructed by Auda, which will eventually replace the borewells, improving the overall water supply system. This transition will enhance the efficiency of water distribution and reduce dependence on individual borewells in the future. The move to rely on borewells underscores the city’s commitment to ensuring access to drinking water in its growing urban landscape. With ongoing infrastructure improvements, Ahmedabad is taking critical steps to provide more reliable and efficient water services to its residents.
