The Ahmedabad railway network is undergoing a significant transformation to cater to the growing demands of the burgeoning Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar urban area. As part of this initiative, 18 trains will be temporarily shifted from the historic Kalupur station to Sabarmati and Gandhinagar stations to facilitate the redevelopment of Kalupur into a world-class facility.
This redevelopment project signifies a multi-pronged approach aimed at enhancing capacity, decongesting the existing network, and fostering the development of new urban areas. Upgrading Kalupur station will elevate its stature to match international standards, providing passengers with a seamless and modern travel experience. The focus extends beyond Kalupur, with Sabarmati station also receiving a major facelift. This includes the infrastructural upgradation of the Integrated Coaching Depot (ICD). Equipped with advanced maintenance facilities for LHB rakes, the upgraded ICD will ensure improved upkeep and efficiency of trains. Additionally, other stations within Ahmedabad city, including Maninagar, Vatva, Chandlodia, and Asarva, are slated for development as Amrit Stations. These stations will benefit from increased capacity and improved passenger amenities, ensuring they can effectively serve the growing ridership.
The strategic relocation of 18 trains serves a dual purpose. It facilitates the redevelopment of Kalupur station while simultaneously decongesting the current network. This decongestion will improve operational efficiency and passenger experience across the entire Ahmedabad railway system. Furthermore, the development of satellite stations like Gandhinagar Capital fosters the creation of new urban growth centres within the city limits. Gandhinagar Capital station itself holds the distinction of being the nation’s first railway station to be redeveloped into a world-class facility. This station boasts of amenities comparable to airports, setting a new benchmark for passenger comfort and convenience. With its capacity to handle more trains, including the prestigious Vande Bharat Express, Gandhinagar Capital is poised to play a pivotal role in the revamped Ahmedabad railway network.
