Ahmedabad Police Deploy AI Dashcams to Curb Traffic Violations

Ahmedabad Police have taken a technological leap to strengthen traffic management by introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled dashcams across 60 patrolling vehicles, including interceptors. These advanced dashboard cameras are designed to automatically detect and record traffic violations such as driving without helmets, seat belts, “triple riding,” and wrong-side driving. The initiative is part of the city’s efforts to enhance road safety and streamline enforcement through data-driven insights.

The system, equipped with real-time monitoring capabilities, aims to improve the accuracy and efficiency of traffic violation detection. By automating the process, the technology minimises human errors and ensures unbiased documentation. Moreover, the AI-enabled cameras offer traffic officers a dynamic view of road conditions, enabling them to respond swiftly to evolving traffic scenarios. According to officials, this initiative not only bolsters enforcement but also safeguards traffic personnel by providing an impartial record of events, mitigating false accusations by offenders.

This project, introduced in its first tranche, aligns with Ahmedabad’s broader strategy to adopt smart city technologies for better urban governance. With the installation of dashcams in 60 vehicles, the system seeks to address persistent issues of traffic indiscipline, reduce accidents, and foster a culture of compliance among road users. Similar technology has been adopted in cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai, but Ahmedabad’s focus on real-time data integration positions it as a leader in leveraging AI for civic applications.
