Ahmedabad Plans Major Infrastructure and Green Initiatives in 2025-26 Budget
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has unveiled a draft budget for the fiscal year 2025-26, amounting to a record Rs 14,001 crore. This ambitious budget sets the stage for several key projects, including the development of Light Rail Transport (LRT) to complement the city’s existing public transport systems, the expansion of sports infrastructure, and a strong commitment to green energy initiatives.
Municipal Commissioner M Thennarasan presented the budget, marking a significant step towards making Ahmedabad a more connected, eco-friendly, and sports-driven city. With a focus on sustainable development, this budget aims to address the growing transportation needs, urban expansion, and environmental challenges while also preparing the city for larger international events like the 2036 Olympics. Recognising the increasing demand for efficient public transport in the face of urban congestion, the AMC has commissioned a feasibility study for the introduction of Light Rail Transport (LRT) in key areas of the city. The LRT system will serve as a vital link between SP Ring Road, SG Highway, and other high-traffic zones, aiming to ease the strain on the AMTS, BRTS, and Metro services. The proposed LRT corridors will connect Delhi Darwaja to Jaspur (20.5 km), Riverfront to Shantipura (18 km), Navrangpura Circle to Supercity Circle (14 km), and Civil Hospital to Narol Circle (22 km), providing seamless access across key regions. This addition is expected to complement and enhance the city’s existing transport network.
In a move to develop a strong sports culture and prepare Ahmedabad for international events, the budget outlines plans for an extensive upgrade of the city’s sports infrastructure. A total of Rs 140 crore has been allocated to expand sports facilities, including the creation of open sports complexes in all seven zones, athletic tracks, and multi-sport facilities. Fifteen new playgrounds and eight sports complexes are also on the cards, supporting the city’s aspirations to bid for global sporting events like the Olympics. As part of its commitment to sustainability, the AMC has prioritised green energy and the expansion of Ahmedabad’s urban green cover. The budget includes provisions for installing a 12.5 MW wind power plant (Rs 112.5 crore) and a 12.5 MW solar power plant (Rs 68.75 crore). Additionally, efforts to increase the city’s green cover include planting three million trees, the development of 22 new gardens, and the renovation of 28 existing parks. These initiatives aim to bolster Ahmedabad’s climate resilience and ensure a cleaner, greener environment for its residents.
To address the growing traffic congestion, the AMC has outlined plans to develop 550 kilometres of roads, with a budget allocation of Rs 1,200 crore. The city will also see the construction of five new flyovers, alongside feasibility studies for eight more, including a second-level bridge at IIM junction and an elevated corridor from Nehru Nagar to SG Highway. These projects are designed to improve traffic flow and provide better connectivity across the city. In a move towards greener transport, AMC plans to introduce 120 new AC electric buses to the AMTS fleet, while replacing diesel buses on the BRTS network with 300 electric buses. The city will also establish a multi-modal transport hub at RTO to integrate AMTS, BRTS, and Metro services, providing a more efficient and sustainable public transport experience. This comprehensive budget is a clear indication of Ahmedabad’s ambition to become a more connected, sustainable, and sports-friendly city, preparing it for a future of rapid growth, environmental responsibility, and global recognition. The proposed projects, if realised, will reshape the city’s infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for its residents while positioning Ahmedabad as a modern, forward-thinking metropolis.
