Ahmedabad Moves Trains For 70‑Day Station Redevelopment

Ahmedabad is bracing for significant rail network adjustments as major redevelopment work begins at Kalupur station—informally known as Ahmedabad station. Starting 4 July through 12 September, a total of 25 trains, including five express services, will be temporarily rerouted to nearby termini Maninagar, Vatva, Asarva, and Sabarmati. The shift is aimed at facilitating the refurbishment of platform eight and related infrastructure at the city’s busiest rail hub.

The phased rail realignment, announced recently, underscores the complexities of executing large-scale transport projects while maintaining service continuity. Five express routes departing Ahmedabad station will be reassigned to Vatva and Maninagar. Meanwhile, nine express and ten passenger services will be serviced from Sabarmati station. Most notably, the Chennai–Ahmedabad and its return leg will operate from Asarva, highlighting the logistical recalibrations essential during the construction interval.

Impact on commuters is substantial. For instance, the 12932 Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central express will depart from Maninagar at 05:50 starting 7 July, while its return Mumbai–Ahmedabad leg, train 12931, will begin running from Vatva at 21:20 from 5 July. Similarly, train 12656 and its reverse, service 12655 between Chennai and Ahmedabad, will launch from Asarva at 18:20 and 21:05 respectively from early July.Sabarmati station will also shoulder a significant portion of diverted services, including the daily Junagadh–Bandra Terminus and Porbandar–Dadar lines. For example, train 12479 will now halt at Sabarmati at 03:05/03:15 daily. Other services such as Puri–Bandra and Jodhpur–Bandra will also shift their stopping points to Sabarmati, with adjusted arrival times communicated to passengers in advance.

Railway officials emphasise that while the platform block at Kalupur may inconvenience daily commuters, it is a strategic decision to accelerate station modernisation. Upgraded facilities, platform extensions, improved signalling systems, and enhanced passenger amenities are expected to follow—ultimately elevating efficiency and safety at one of western India’s most trafficked transport nodes. The 70-day construction window reflects the authorities’ attempt to balance speed with minimal disruption. A spokesperson from the railway reiterated that passengers are encouraged to reconfirm departure points and times via official helplines or digital platforms before travel. While temporary shifts may create initial disarray, they are considered essential for laying the groundwork for long-term improvements.

As Ahmedabad advances towards urban transformation, this rail operational change serves as a reminder of the infrastructural trade-offs cities must navigate. Redevelopment efforts, especially in heritage stations like Kalupur, often require short-term inconvenience for commuter households—yet promise modernized, climate-resilient transport corridors and accessible intermodal linkages in the coming years.

In the interim, rail commuters are advised to plan travel diligently, accounting for different access points, feeder services, and novel station stops. Even as logistical nuances evolve, the success of the redevelopment rests on cooperative commuter adaptation and proactive railway communication.
