Ahmedabad is moving forward with the next phase of its urban transit expansion as the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRCL) invites bids for geotechnical investigations for Metro Phase 2A and 2B. The announcement, covering the proposed Airport line and GIFT City extension, signals a strategic effort to enhance connectivity while reinforcing sustainable urban mobility in India’s fastest-growing cities.
Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro will link Koteshwar Road to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport, spanning approximately 6 kilometres and featuring four stations along an elevated and underground route. The initial contract is estimated at ₹1,800 crore and aims to support airport accessibility, reduce surface congestion, and integrate the metro system into the broader city transport network. Phase 2B focuses on internal connectivity within GIFT City, a major economic and financial hub. The project covers a total of 10 kilometres, with construction beginning on a 3.3-kilometre elevated viaduct featuring three stations. This stretch is projected to cost ₹900 crore and is intended to improve last-mile connectivity within the smart city, facilitating the movement of workers and residents efficiently while reducing vehicular emissions.
An official from GMRCL highlighted the importance of geotechnical surveys: “These investigations ensure structural safety and help design resilient foundations that can withstand urban pressures, soil variability, and long-term usage demands.” The surveys will involve detailed soil analysis, borehole drilling, and evaluation of underground conditions critical for tunnelling and elevated viaduct construction.Urban planners and transport experts view these phases as pivotal for Ahmedabad’s sustainability agenda. By integrating metro expansion with smart mobility solutions, the city can support lower-carbon transportation, reduce congestion, and enhance equitable access to public infrastructure. Industry observers note that careful planning at this geotechnical stage can minimise future construction risks and optimise cost-efficiency.
The tender process is open from 2 December to 17 December 2025, with an earnest money deposit of ₹2,14,000. Contractors with experience in large-scale urban rail projects are expected to participate, potentially introducing innovative engineering and environmentally sensitive construction practices. With Ahmedabad aiming for inclusive and low-carbon urban growth, Metro Phase 2A and 2B represent a step forward in integrating sustainable infrastructure with economic development. The project not only connects key nodes in the city but also reinforces India’s commitment to resilient, equitable, and future-ready urban mobility systems.
