Ahmedabad Launches 805 Crore Six Lane Sanand Khoraj Road Project

Ahmedabad is set to witness a significant upgrade in road infrastructure with the launch of the ₹805-crore six-lane widening project on the Shantipura–Khoraj GIDC section of the Ahmedabad–Malia Road. The project, aimed at reducing congestion and strengthening connectivity across the industrial hubs of Sanand and surrounding regions, was inaugurated this week by senior central and state officials. Authorities emphasised that this development will not only enhance traffic flow but also support sustainable industrial growth in the district.

The Sanand industrial belt and adjoining areas have experienced rapid industrial expansion over the past decade, leading to a sharp increase in vehicular traffic. The current four-lane road accommodates more than 43,000 vehicles daily, causing frequent congestion and safety concerns. Officials highlighted that the six-lane upgrade is a timely response to this pressure, providing smoother transit for passenger, commercial, and industrial vehicles alike.

Spanning 28.8 kilometres, the project encompasses major road widening and associated infrastructure improvements. Key components include 22.7 kilometres of service roads, widening of 13 minor bridges, a six-lane elevated flyover, a three-lane right-turn flyover, and five underpasses at Ularia, Telav (two locations), Sanand GIDC gate, and Khoraj GIDC. Additionally, approximately 172 culverts will be constructed or renovated, improving access to local areas and industrial estates.

Officials explained that the upgraded corridor will significantly reduce travel time, enhance safety, and streamline the movement of goods and personnel between industrial hubs like Sanand and Viramgam. The initiative is expected to boost fuel efficiency, reduce accidents, and improve regional economic productivity. The project aligns with the Gujarat government’s broader strategy to modernise transport infrastructure in high-growth industrial corridors. By enhancing connectivity across critical zones, authorities aim to support the increasing demands of the automotive, manufacturing, and logistics sectors operating in and around Sanand GIDC.

Officials emphasised that the development will also have wider socio-economic benefits, improving regional mobility and creating safer road conditions for both commuters and residents. Sustainable engineering and design practices have been incorporated to ensure long-term efficiency and minimal environmental impact.Following the inauguration, officials engaged with local residents, highlighting the anticipated improvements in road safety and commuting convenience. The project is seen as a strategic step towards strengthening Gujarat’s industrial competitiveness while promoting inclusive regional development.
