Ahmedabad Gujarat Projects Boost Housing And Green Growth

Ahmedabad is set to witness a major push in urban infrastructure and green growth as projects worth over Rs 5,400 crore are being launched across the state. The initiatives span transport, housing, railways, and clean energy, aiming to strengthen Gujarat’s position as an economic and industrial hub while addressing sustainable development challenges.

The multi-sector plan includes critical works in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Mehsana, combining modern connectivity with eco-sensitive design. Among the highlights is the upgradation of the SP Ring Road into a six-lane controlled-access expressway. Officials confirmed that the project will be executed under the hybrid annuity model, a financing mode designed to balance public and private risk. Housing for the urban poor also features prominently. More than 1,400 homes and 130 shops have been completed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), offering in-situ redevelopment for informal settlements in Ahmedabad. Experts say such projects reflect the shift towards equitable city planning, ensuring that redevelopment benefits those most vulnerable to displacement.

The city will further benefit from new stormwater drainage networks in localities including Shela, Manipur and Telav. Water distribution stations are also planned in Thaltej, Naranpura and Chandkheda, while Daskroi taluka will gain a modern pumping station and 23 km water pipeline under the Jal Jeevan Mission, securing potable water for 10 villages. Urban planners believe these interventions could significantly reduce flooding risks and improve water security for residents.

In Gandhinagar, investments of over Rs 280 crore target sewage and stormwater systems, alongside a new road aligned with the Metro corridor. Similar attention to transport infrastructure is evident in Mehsana district, where more than Rs 1,700 crore is being channelled into railway upgrades. These include doubling the Mehsana–Palanpur line and converting narrow gauges into broad-gauge routes, enhancing freight efficiency and passenger connectivity. Railway development will be paired with new services, including a passenger train between Katosan Road and Sabarmati, as well as a freight train supporting the auto industry in Becharaji. Logistics experts argue that such moves could bolster Gujarat’s manufacturing competitiveness by improving supply chain efficiency.

A major industrial highlight is the launch of Maruti Suzuki’s first electric vehicle production line at Hansalpur. The facility will not only manufacture the new e-Vitara but also produce hybrid battery electrodes, with plans to export battery-electric vehicles to 100 countries. Industry observers see this as a decisive step towards India’s clean mobility transition, with Gujarat positioned as a central hub. While the scale of these projects signals a determined growth path, sustainable urbanists caution that the long-term challenge lies in balancing rapid infrastructure expansion with environmental stewardship. As climate-linked disruptions intensify, Gujarat’s ability to build resilient, low-carbon infrastructure will determine whether these investments deliver enduring benefits for communities.
