Ahmedabad Faces Heavy Rain As Cyclone Shakti Approaches Gujarat Coast

Ahmedabad experienced a sudden night of heavy rain and thunder as Cyclone Shakti, originating in the Arabian Sea, veered towards Gujarat. While meteorological experts confirm the cyclone is weakening, the storm has caused localised waterlogging and disrupted traffic, particularly affecting two-wheeler riders in low-lying areas of the city. Key neighbourhoods reported temporary road flooding as rainfall intensified overnight.

According to officials from the Meteorological Department, Cyclone Shakti is projected to continue its west-southwest trajectory until October 6 before gradually turning eastward over the west-central Arabian Sea. By October 7, the system is expected to weaken into a deep depression, with wind speeds ranging from 50 to 60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph. Coastal Gujarat and North Maharashtra are likely to experience squally winds and rough sea conditions during this period, prompting authorities to caution fishermen against venturing into affected waters.

Despite the cyclone’s proximity, meteorological assessments indicate minimal threat to major urban centres in Gujarat. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in Ahmedabad and surrounding districts, while regions such as Porbandar, Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Dwarka, and Jamnagar may experience heavier showers in the coming days. Current forecasts suggest that significant rainfall across the state is unlikely over the next five days, though localized weather disturbances could persist.

Authorities have issued alert signals at strategic coastal ports, including Signal Number 3 at Mangrol, signalling mild danger and emphasising preparedness. City and state administrations remain on high alert, closely monitoring weather developments and advising citizens to avoid seashores during heightened wind conditions. Measures have also been implemented to mitigate the impact of waterlogging in urban areas and ensure public safety.Experts note that cyclones approaching land tend to lose intensity due to interactions with terrestrial conditions and varying wind patterns. The current winds in Gujarat, both from northern and southern directions, are contributing to the weakening of Cyclone Shakti. Officials emphasise that while immediate danger remains low, continued vigilance is essential for coastal and island communities along Gujarat’s shoreline.
Cyclone Shakti serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to Arabian Sea storms and highlights the importance of advanced warning systems, coordinated disaster preparedness, and public awareness initiatives. While Ahmedabad and other major cities may see temporary disruptions, proactive planning by authorities aims to minimise risks and ensure community safety as the storm progresses.
