Ahmedabad Allocates Key Plot for Future Sports Complex

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has earmarked a substantial 100,000 square metre plot within the TP Scheme 204 off SG Road for the development of a comprehensive sports infrastructure. This strategic allocation underscores the city’s commitment to enhancing its sports facilities and bolstering its bid for the prestigious global event.

The plot, which surpasses the size of the 79,500 square metre land designated for the Olympic Sports Complex in Naranpura, represents a substantial addition to the city’s sports infrastructure. Initially zoned for social amenities such as parks and gardens, the land’s designation has been revised to support the burgeoning need for advanced sports facilities. This land, situated at a crucial juncture between SG Road, Mumatpura Road, and SP Ring Road, is positioned advantageously for residents across a wide area, including Ambli, Ghuma, Jodhpur, Shela, Vejalpur, Prahladnagar, Sarkhej, Makarba, and surrounding localities. The plot’s central location and extensive size are expected to accommodate a variety of sports facilities, potentially including training grounds, arenas, and other infrastructure critical for Olympic-level events.

The decision to reserve this land for sports development follows the recent approval of amendments to TP Scheme 204. Initially, the scheme had reserved two plots of equal size for parks and gardens. However, following revisions and the AMC’s commitment to supporting Olympic ambitions, the scheme now retains only one such plot for green spaces. The reassignment of the second plot to sports infrastructure highlights a strategic shift in priorities. TP Scheme 204 has faced scrutiny due to allegations of irregularities benefiting influential landowners, which led to a freeze on development permissions by the state government in 2017. This pause prompted the establishment of a state-appointed committee to reassess and revise the scheme. The recent amendments and land allocations signify a forward-looking approach by the AMC to not only address past discrepancies but also to align with the city’s future aspirations.

The development of this sports infrastructure is a pivotal move in Ahmedabad’s journey towards becoming a global sports destination, reflecting both an ambition to host the Olympics and a commitment to enhancing urban sports facilities. As preparations advance, Ahmedabad’s proactive measures are expected to position it favourably in the race for hosting the 2036 Games, with the newly designated land serving as a cornerstone of its Olympic strategy.
