Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) has implemented a state-of-the-art cloud-based irrigation system across its 17-acre horticultural area.
This initiative, managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, marks a pivotal move in the airport’s commitment to water conservation and eco-friendly operations. The smart irrigation system leverages real-time weather data and sensor inputs to deliver precise amounts of water to each plant, ensuring optimal growth while preventing wastage. This technology-driven approach has resulted in an annual water saving of over 17,850 kilolitres, equivalent to the daily needs of a small city. The system’s efficiency is further enhanced by its remote operability, allowing adjustments to irrigation schedules via a smartphone or control room interface.
This development aligns with SVPIA’s broader sustainability agenda, which encompasses energy-efficient lighting, waste reduction programmes, and the promotion of green technologies. The airport’s dedication to environmental stewardship has been recognised through various accolades, including the Platinum Award for energy efficiency at the SEEM Awards in 2024. These recognitions underscore the airport’s role as a leader in integrating sustainable practices within the aviation sector. Looking ahead, SVPIA plans to expand its green initiatives by increasing its tree plantation efforts and enhancing green cover both inside and outside terminal buildings. These efforts are part of a comprehensive strategy to create a sustainable and eco-friendly airport environment, setting a benchmark for others in the industry.
