Ahmedabad Airport Faces Severe Weather Delays

Heavy rainfall across Ahmedabad and the broader Gujarat region has severely impacted operations at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport, leading to significant disruptions on Tuesday. The inclement weather caused delays for 33 flights and resulted in the cancellation of two flights, prompting airport authorities to issue a critical advisory for travellers.

According to airport sources, the disruptions predominantly affected domestic flights, including connections from Ahmedabad to major cities such as Mumbai, Nagpur, Jodhpur, Kolkata, Goa, Delhi, Bhuj, Nanded, Jaipur, Varanasi, and Indore. International flights to destinations including Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Dubai also experienced delays, while incoming flights from Kuwait and London faced similar issues. Notably, two flights to and from Diu were cancelled outright.

The previous day also saw considerable flight delays, with 48 flights affected due to issues with rotational scheduling and arrivals. Visibility concerns in Vadodara led to two flights being diverted to Ahmedabad. Additionally, a Mumbai-Ahmedabad flight had to execute a go-around at Ahmedabad Airport before being diverted to Indore. The heavy rainfall in Mumbai exacerbated the situation, causing further delays for flights operating between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Despite the adverse weather conditions, both passenger terminals at SVPI Airport – T1 and T2 – continued operations without significant disruptions. The rainwater did not affect the terminal areas, ensuring that passenger services remained largely unaffected. However, the airport operator has urged passengers to verify their flight schedules and allocate extra time for check-in, as waterlogged roads and poor visibility continue to pose challenges.

Airlines, including IndiGo, have also issued advisories recommending that passengers closely monitor their flight status to avoid inconvenience. The ongoing weather conditions are expected to persist, potentially leading to further delays and operational disruptions. In summary, while the Ahmedabad Airport has managed to maintain operational continuity in its terminals, the impact of heavy rains has led to significant flight delays and cancellations. Passengers are advised to stay informed about their flight statuses and prepare for potential delays as the weather conditions evolve.
