The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to commence the construction of the Agra Gwalior Expressway, a 88.4-kilometre-long, six-lane, access-controlled greenfield corridor aimed at enhancing connectivity between Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
This project, estimated at ₹4,613 crore, is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Agra and Gwalior from approximately three hours to just one hour, benefiting commuters and boosting regional trade and tourism.
The expressway will begin at Deori village in Agra district and extend through Rajasthan, culminating at Susera village near Gwalior. This new route will alleviate congestion on the existing NH-44, providing a faster and more efficient alternative for travelers. The expressway is also expected to enhance connectivity to key tourist destinations such as the Taj Mahal and Gwalior Fort, further promoting tourism in the region.
In addition to improving travel efficiency, the project incorporates measures to minimize environmental impact. The expressway will pass through the National Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary, necessitating the construction of a new cable-stayed bridge over the Chambal River. This bridge design aims to safeguard the habitat of the endangered Gharial crocodile, with features such as sound barriers and light cutters to mitigate disturbances to wildlife.
The project includes the construction of eight major bridges, 23 minor bridges, six flyovers, one rail-over-bridge, and 192 culverts, all designed to enhance the durability and safety of the expressway. The development will be carried out under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, ensuring efficient project execution and long-term maintenance.
The Agra Gwalior Expressway is anticipated to be completed by 2027, with the project expected to stimulate economic growth, improve infrastructure, and foster regional integration. As the project progresses, it will play a pivotal role in shaping the transportation landscape of central India, facilitating smoother and more sustainable travel across these interconnected states.
