Agra has taken a decisive step towards strengthening its urban water infrastructure by awarding a ₹104.06 crore contract to EMS Limited. The project, sanctioned by UP Jal Nigam (Urban), is part of the Agra Water Supply Reorganisation Scheme focused on the Trans Yamuna Zone-I & II—an area with growing water demand and urgent need for sustainable supply solutions.
EMS Ltd emerged as the lowest bidder in the competitive tendering process and will now undertake the engineering, design, and construction of a large-scale integrated water infrastructure system. The project’s scope includes the development of a raw water intake well, a pump house, an approach bridge, and an 1100 mm diameter raw water rising main that will connect the intake facility to a newly planned 55 MLD (million litres per day) Water Treatment Plant.
Designed to be completed within a 24-month timeline, the project represents a crucial investment in urban water resilience. The Water Treatment Plant will incorporate advanced technologies to ensure high standards of purification, making the treated water suitable for household consumption across key urban and peri-urban areas in Agra. The contract will be executed under a domestic mandate with no related-party involvement, according to the company. EMS Ltd has also confirmed that it will regularly provide updates on progress, especially given the high expectations tied to the scheme’s delivery.
The Agra Water Supply Reorganisation Scheme is a critical component of Uttar Pradesh’s broader mission to provide equitable access to safe and clean drinking water. With its expanding population and tourism-related stress on municipal infrastructure, Agra’s inclusion in targeted urban development planning has been long overdue. The Trans Yamuna zone—often seen as under-served—will particularly benefit from the upgraded systems, potentially transforming water security in the area.
Industry observers see this project as a strong vote of confidence in EMS Ltd’s ability to deliver high-value public utility contracts. The firm, which specialises in water and wastewater management solutions, has steadily built its reputation as a reliable partner in state-level infrastructure initiatives. This win not only enhances its order book but also reinforces its position as a key player in India’s growing urban water management ecosystem. The announcement had a positive ripple effect on EMS Ltd’s market performance, with the company’s stock closing 0.4 per cent higher on the day of the contract disclosure. Though the market movement was modest, analysts note that long-duration, government-backed infrastructure orders like this one offer strong earnings visibility and strategic growth leverage over the medium term.
As Agra joins the list of Indian cities upgrading essential infrastructure through public-private execution models, this project is also expected to set benchmarks in construction quality, treatment efficiency, and service equity. The contract not only addresses immediate infrastructure needs but also fits into a broader vision of water sustainability, critical to building climate-resilient urban centres in India.
