Agartala Housing Push Gets Rs 14 Crore Boost

The central government has sanctioned an additional ₹14.96 crore for the timely completion of the Lighthouse Project in Agartala. This renewed financial backing aims to address construction delays caused by a combination of geographic challenges, pandemic-induced disruptions, and natural calamities over the past year.

The Lighthouse Project, a flagship housing initiative under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), is being developed on the western outskirts of Agartala to provide permanent housing to families from economically weaker sections and low-income groups. The additional fund is expected to fast-track the remaining construction activities, ensuring that the state’s goal of inclusive and sustainable urban housing remains on course.

Launched to promote eco-friendly construction technologies and equitable urban living, the Lighthouse Project holds strategic importance for Tripura. The state’s top planning body has consistently highlighted the project’s significance, both for reducing the housing deficit and for introducing green building technologies in a region traditionally hampered by tough terrain and limited infrastructure access. A spokesperson for the Tripura Urban Planning and Development Authority (TUDA) confirmed that the recent central allocation came after concerted follow-ups at the national level. TUDA expressed confidence that with these funds in place, the project will now proceed without further hindrance, overcoming the roadblocks that had stalled earlier phases.

Despite an ambitious beginning, the project had struggled to maintain its timeline, with progress hampered by last year’s unprecedented flooding and logistical delays. Officials have since been attempting to reorient efforts to meet deadlines while ensuring that construction adheres to the green building norms recommended under the PMAY framework. The sanctioned funds will also aid in deploying faster, low-carbon technologies and locally sourced materials to ensure the dwellings are not only cost-effective but also climate-resilient. The Lighthouse Project in Agartala is among six such projects nationwide that seek to demonstrate modern, innovative housing solutions with a focus on sustainability. Each project is designed to act as a ‘lighthouse’ for future developments by showcasing best practices in energy efficiency, waste management, and inclusive design.

For a state like Tripura where infrastructure constraints have long hindered equitable housing the continuation of this scheme is more than a construction story; it is a commitment to human dignity, security, and a greener tomorrow. The latest funding approval marks not just a policy win but a reassurance to hundreds of families waiting to move into their first secure homes. As implementation enters its final phase, the broader hope is that Agartala’s Lighthouse Project can serve as a benchmark for smaller cities across India in building not just houses, but sustainable, inclusive communities for the future.
