King George’s Medical University (KGMU) is making significant strides in the treatment of skin disorders such as vitiligo and psoriasis with the introduction of the advanced NB-UVB UVA chamber machine. This pioneering technology, which involves the controlled exposure of the affected areas to narrow-band ultraviolet B light, is designed to provide an effective solution for patients suffering from these chronic conditions. With an investment of ₹15 lakh already allocated for the purchase of the machine, KGMU is positioning itself at the forefront of dermatological care in the region.
The NB-UVB treatment method is highly regarded for its effectiveness in managing skin diseases such as vitiligo, psoriasis, and severe itching (pruritus). Unlike traditional treatments, this method is non-invasive, painless, and does not incur additional treatment costs for patients. According to Professor Swastika Suvirya, Head of Dermatology at KGMU, the therapy is safe and suitable for patients of all ages, including children and pregnant women. This is particularly significant in a country where affordable and safe medical solutions are often in short supply.
