Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) has achieved a significant milestone in its global expansion strategy by securing a 30-year concession agreement to operate and manage Container Terminal 2 (CT2) at the Dar es Salaam Port in Tanzania. This landmark agreement, facilitated through its subsidiary Adani International Ports Holdings Pte Ltd. (AIPH), underscores APSEZ’s ambition to emerge as one of the world’s leading port operators by 2030.
The agreement, signed with the Tanzania Ports Authority, marks APSEZ’s entry into Tanzania and represents a strategic move to capitalize on the high growth potential of East Africa’s trade corridors. Dar es Salaam Port, renowned as a vital gateway port in the region, boasts well-connected road and rail networks, making it an ideal hub for trade activities. CT2, equipped with four berths, boasts an annual cargo handling capacity of 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), positioning it as a critical trade facilitator in East Africa. East Africa Gateway Ltd (EAGL), established as a joint venture between AIPH, AD Ports Group, and East Harbour Terminals Ltd (EHTL), will serve as the operational vehicle for this venture.
APSEZ will assume the role of the controlling shareholder and consolidate EAGL on its financial statements. In 2023, CT2 managed 0.82 million TEUs of containers, representing approximately 83% of Tanzania’s total container volumes, underscoring its significance in regional trade dynamics.
With a vision to be the largest ports and logistics platform globally, APSEZ has been aggressively expanding its presence beyond Indian shores. The company, a part of the Adani Group, currently operates seven ports and terminals on the west coast and eight on the east coast of India. Additionally, it is developing a transshipment port in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and owns the Haifa Port in Israel. In alignment with its commitment to sustainability, APSEZ has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025 and has joined the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to set emission reduction targets.
The agreement with Dar es Salaam Port marks a significant stride for Adani Ports as it continues to bolster its global footprint and solidify its position as a leading port operator and logistics provider on the world stage.
