In a ground-breaking move towards sustainable urban mobility, Adani Electricity and Tata Power have embarked on an ambitious initiative to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers in residential housing societies across Mumbai.
The project aims to deploy 8,500 share EV chargers in 4,000 housing societies, with Adani Electricity already implementing 240 chargers and Tata Power installing similar facilities in 720 societies. Unlike conventional setups where EV owners individually install charging points, this innovative concept enables housing societies to collectively host charging stations on their premises. This communal approach democratises access to EV charging infrastructure, allowing any flat owner within the society to charge their vehicle conveniently.
The strategic placement of these charging stations within housing societies offers multiple advantages. Firstly, it eliminates the need for complex wiring, streamlining installation and minimising disruption to residents. Moreover, power utilities will provide dedicated staff for maintenance and operation, alleviating the burden on society management committees. Crucially, the initiative promises cost savings for EV users, with charging rates anticipated to be lower than those at petrol pump EV stations. This affordability factor, coupled with the convenience of app-driven operations and direct payment through mobile platforms, enhances the appeal of electric mobility among residential communities.
Adani Electricity and Tata Power’s collaborative effort not only promotes sustainability but also facilitates the transition from traditional fossil fuel vehicles to electric alternatives. By fostering a supportive ecosystem for EV adoption at the grassroots level, the initiative contributes to reducing carbon emissions and combating urban pollution. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with the government’s vision to accelerate EV adoption in India, as outlined in policies such as the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme. By leveraging private sector expertise and infrastructure, the project underscores the pivotal role of public-private partnerships in driving sustainable development.
In conclusion, Adani Electricity and Tata Power’s joint initiative represents a significant milestone in Mumbai’s journey towards sustainable urban mobility. By democratising access to EV charging infrastructure within residential communities, the project paves the way for widespread adoption of electric vehicles, contributing to a cleaner and greener future for the city A Tata Power official said, “We provide semi-public EV charging points for housing societies. These chargers are open for flat members to charge their cars at their convenience. Besides the existing 720 semi-public charging points, we plan to reach out to more societies in Mumbai.”
Another official said that the installation is also simple. It involves one centralised, ARAI-certified share charge station (which can be used by multiple e-cars or e-bikes) and a 24×7 technical support team. A senior Adani Electricity official said that he has interacted personally with residents of few societies using the facility. A resident of Dheeraj Savera Tower in Borivali said that the society’s decision to implement the common charging station has been a ‘game changer’. Another resident of Runwal Elegante society in Shastri Nagar in Andheri said it was an effective way to save money and reduce carbon footprint. He added, “Adani Electricity already sources 35% of its power from renewable sources, aiming for 60% by 2027.”
