Aarey Cattle Farms Crippled by Water Shortage

A critical water crisis has engulfed the Aarey Milk Colony in Mumbai, leaving thousands of cattle without access to drinking water. The crisis has been triggered by a malfunctioning water pump that has been out of service for several days. Despite repeated complaints to the Aarey CEO’s office and the Public Works Department (PWD), responsible for water supply to the area, the pump has yet to be repaired.

This has forced cattle farm owners to rely on private tankers, incurring significant additional costs. Over 10,000 buffaloes are currently without a reliable source of drinking water, and farm owners are spending upwards of Rs 3,000 per day to purchase water from private tankers. The lack of water has also impacted the overall health and well-being of the cattle, with reduced milk production and unsanitary conditions in the stables. The situation is particularly dire for the 22 units in the Aarey Milk Colony that are directly affected by the pump malfunction. These units have no alternative water source and are entirely dependent on the pump for their water supply.

The water crisis has also extended to the 27 tribal hamlets in Aarey. While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) supplies water to these hamlets, the supply is limited in terms of both quantity and duration. Residents have been demanding increased water supply pressure and extended supply hours to ensure adequate access to drinking water. The water shortage in Aarey is a stark reminder of the critical role of water infrastructure in supporting the needs of communities and industries. It is imperative that authorities address the pump malfunction promptly to alleviate the suffering of the cattle and ensure the sustainability of the Aarey Milk Colony.
