AAI Pushes for Faster Completion of Patna Airport Expansion
The expansion of Patna’s Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport (JPNI) is making significant strides, with efforts to accelerate the construction of its new terminal building. As part of a broader plan to enhance airport infrastructure, officials are focusing on ensuring the timely completion of the new two-storey terminal, expected to be ready by April this year.
The terminal, covering 65,155 square metres, is set to cater to up to 10 million passengers annually, marking a major leap in the airport’s capacity. The design of the building draws inspiration from the Nalanda ruins, coupled with distinctive Madhubani art, offering a unique blend of modernity and cultural heritage. The new facility will also include cutting-edge amenities, making it a major upgrade for passengers. In addition to the terminal, other vital infrastructure improvements are underway. These include the construction of a multi-level car parking facility, a new air traffic control tower, cargo facilities, and parking bays for aircraft.A newly inaugurated domestic air cargo terminal, located near the technical block, covers 3,392 square metres and is poised to strengthen the region’s logistics capabilities.
The ongoing expansion is in line with the government’s objective to make Patna a more accessible and efficient hub for both domestic and international travel. The AAI has already laid out plans for further development, including a comprehensive project at Bihta airport. Experts have highlighted the importance of such expansions in fostering economic growth, facilitating smoother passenger flows, and improving overall connectivity in Bihar. The project at Bihta, involving the construction of a terminal and support structures, is estimated to cost Rs 459 crore, with work set to begin in April. This initiative reflects a broader effort to improve regional connectivity and infrastructure in line with India’s growing aviation needs.
