AAI Awards Gaggal Airport for Best Passenger Experience in 2024

Gaggal Airport in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district has emerged as the top performer in the Airports Authority of India’s (AAI) ‘Customer Satisfaction Survey (2024) Awards’ for domestic airports, setting a benchmark in passenger experience and service quality.

The prestigious accolade was presented during the AAI’s annual day celebrations in New Delhi, recognising the airport’s consistent efforts to enhance its operational standards and passenger services. This award marks a significant milestone for Gaggal Airport, reflecting its rapid growth and dedication to sustainable, eco-friendly aviation practices. The airport has not only managed to improve its service delivery but has also contributed to the regional economy by facilitating better connectivity to key destinations. Since its inception, Gaggal Airport has been pivotal in linking Himachal Pradesh with major cities, supporting tourism and regional development. In 2024, the airport registered a record passenger footfall of 2,08,275, a significant increase from 1,93,114 in 2023 and 1,76,015 in 2022. This growth trajectory highlights the airport’s role in promoting both leisure and pilgrimage tourism, with proximity to attractions such as the Jwalamukhi Temple, Chintpurni, Chamunda Devi, Kangra Fort, and the Dalai Lama’s residence in McLeodganj.

One of the key factors behind Gaggal’s success has been the introduction of additional flight services. The airport recently launched a second flight to Chandigarh, enhancing connectivity and offering greater convenience for passengers. Currently, Gaggal Airport handles 18 flight movements daily, comprising nine aircraft, a testament to its growing operational capacity. Looking ahead, the airport is set to expand its network with new routes to Jaipur and Dehradun. The necessary approvals from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and AAI have been secured, paving the way for more direct connections and increased passenger traffic. This expansion aligns with the broader goal of improving regional connectivity under India’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme. In addition to operational enhancements, the airport is undergoing infrastructure development to support its rising passenger volumes. The state government is actively engaged in expanding Gaggal Airport’s facilities, focusing on sustainability and eco-friendly practices to align with India’s commitment to achieving zero-net carbon emissions.

Gaggal’s success story underscores the importance of customer-centric policies in the aviation sector. The airport’s focus on improving passenger experiences through better amenities, efficient services, and environmental sustainability has set a new standard for regional airports across the country.
