Assam, poised at the forefront of logistics innovation, is gearing up to unveil India’s pioneering river terminal in Guwahati, heralding a transformative era in the nation’s transportation sector.
This monumental development underscores the strategic significance of bolstering inland waterways infrastructure to catalyse economic growth and enhance connectivity across the region. The upcoming river terminal in Guwahati has the potential to boost the economy of Assam by simplifying the movement of goods and providing smooth passenger transportation. This project is a reflection of the government’s goal to enhance connectivity networks and promote regional development and is expected to transform the logistics scenario in northeastern India.
Construction work on the Guwahati Gateway Ghat (GGG) began on May 13, 2022. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, emphasised the crucial role the GGG will play in bringing a new phase of prosperity to the state. The World Bank has provided funding for this modern river ferry terminal, which will leverage the strategic location of Guwahati along the banks of the Brahmaputra River and revolutionise the waterborne transportation infrastructure in Assam.
Crafted by the Ports & Waterways teams in India, the terminal is designed to offer a plethora of amenities including cafes, a canteen, and accessibility ramps, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for passengers. Scheduled to provide year-round transportation services, the GGG will serve as a pivotal nexus connecting Guwahati with neighbouring river access points or ‘ghats,’ fostering socio-economic development and cultural exchange.
