Maharashtra is advancing one of India’s most ambitious aviation infrastructure proposals — a first‑of‑its‑kind offshore airport off the state’s western coast near Vadhavan Port that is projected to reshape regional connectivity and economic flows. With an estimated investment of ₹45,000 crore, the project aims to handle up to 90 million passengers annually and integrate air, sea, rail and road networks, responding to mounting capacity pressures on existing airports in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and broader Western India.

Integration with transport corridors such as the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high‑speed rail and the Uttan‑Virar Sea Link is part of a broader national infrastructure agenda tying ports, airports and freight corridors into a coherent network.
Analysts say India’s aviation footprint has struggled to keep pace with rising demand, particularly in the Mumbai region, where existing hubs operate near capacity. An additional major airport with international passenger and cargo capabilities could rebalance traffic and fuel economic activity in adjacent industrial and urban clusters. Urban economists point out that improved connectivity catalyses subsidiaries such as hospitality, manufacturing and export‑oriented services — especially when tied to a major seaport.However, the scale and complexity of the offshore project carry substantial environmental, technical and governance risks.
