Central Railway is set to operate special train services on January 25, 2026, across two key routes connecting Mumbai with central and coastal regions, responding to rising passenger demand. The initiative includes services between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Nagpur, as well as between Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) and Madgaon, aiming to improve commuter convenience and regional connectivity. These temporary services reflect efforts to manage peak travel requirements while optimising existing rail infrastructure.
On the CSMT–Nagpur route, two special services will operate. The outbound train departs from CSMT at 00:20 hrs and is scheduled to reach Nagpur by 15:30 hrs, while the return service leaves Nagpur at 20:00 hrs, arriving in Mumbai the following day at 13:30 hrs. These trains will halt at major transit points including Dadar, Thane, Kalyan, Igatpuri, Nashik Road, and other significant junctions en route, enabling regional mobility and supporting economic activity across Maharashtra. LHB coaches have been deployed, with a composition of one AC 2-tier, six AC 3-tier, nine sleeper class, four general second-class coaches, one guard-cum-luggage van, and one generator van, ensuring a balance of comfort and capacity.
Similarly, two special services on the LTT–Madgaon route are scheduled. Departing LTT at 01:00 hrs, the first train reaches Madgaon by 12:00 hrs, with the return service leaving at 14:30 hrs and arriving at LTT at 04:05 hrs the following day. The route covers key stations such as Panvel, Roha, Mangaon, Ratnagiri, Kankavali, Sindhudurg, and Sawantwadi Road, enhancing access to the Konkan region. ICF coaches will be used, comprising one AC 2-tier, three AC 3-tier, eight sleeper class, four general second-class coaches, and two guard-cum-luggage vans, reflecting a design to accommodate varying passenger segments. A senior railway official highlighted that the temporary services are part of a broader operational strategy to ensure network resilience during periods of heightened travel, particularly given seasonal tourism and regional commuting patterns. Urban planners note that such interventions support equitable access to transportation, reducing congestion at primary terminals and promoting efficient utilisation of existing rail infrastructure.
From a civic and economic perspective, the additional services facilitate timely movement of passengers, bolster tourism along the Konkan corridor, and strengthen intercity connections, aligning with sustainable urban mobility objectives. The measure also underscores the importance of rail networks in supporting zero-carbon urban transport alternatives, particularly for densely populated metropolitan regions. Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, while local authorities recommend early ticket booking to manage anticipated demand. Looking ahead, ongoing monitoring of travel patterns may inform further service augmentations across central and coastal rail corridors.
